| Orange Bowl Finals Set |
Todor Enev started dreaming of an Orange Bowl title on his first trip to Miami as a 13-year old. On Saturday, the dream moved one step closer to reality when he beat unseeded Giles Muller, 6-2, 6-0, to advance to the Orange Bowl Boys 18 finals.
The No. 1 seed, who swept through the draw by winning every match in two sets, will face Bruno Soares of Brazil for the Eddie Herr trophy he has coveted for so long. Soares, the tournament’s No. 14 seed, beat Mexico’s Bruno Echagaray 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 Saturday to earn the shot at Enev.
In the girls 18s, No. 1 seed Aniko Kapros of Hungary was upended by another No. 14 seed—Russian Vera Zvonareva— in three sets (1-6, 6-2, 6-3) while No. 6 seed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia was upset by No. 10 seed Edina Gallovits (7-6 [3], 6-3) of Romania. Gallovits, who celebrated her 16th birthday on the first day of the tournament, is ranked No. 12 in the current ITF rankings and Zvonareva is No. 19.
Argentina’s Brian Dabul was a double winner in the Boys 16s competition: he won the singles title Saturday with a 6-2, 6-0 win over France’s Marc Auradou and then the doubles title with fellow countryman Juan Monaco. The two beat Togo’s Komlavi Loglo and Algeria’s Lamine Ouahab, 6-1, 6-4.
No. 4 seed Marion Bartoli of France beat No. 8 seed Daniela Casanova of Switzerland for the Orange Bowl Girls 16s title.
Enev was the lone No. 1 seed in any division to make the final at the 2000 Ericsson Orange Bowl Championships. What makes the 18-year old Bulgarian so good?
Janko Tipsarevic, an Enev victim in the quarterfinals, offers this perspective: “These courts are not so fast and he’s a clay court player. He has a solid serve, a perfect return and he runs so good. I only had maybe three of four winners in my match against him. I think he’ll win.”
