Bogomolov Routs Friend, Advances to BURGER KING Orange Bowl Semifinals
Key Biscayne, Fla. – Playing his last junior tournament, Alex Bogomolov of Miami advanced to the semifinals of the 55th Annual BURGER KING Orange Bowl International Tennis Champions. His next opponent, Juan Monaco, is making his debut on the International Tennis Federation World Junior Ranking Circuit.

Bogomolov, the reigning USTA Super National Boys’ 18s champion, routed his longtime friend, Russian Philippe Moukhometov, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals, winning twelve straight games on Stadium Court in front of family and friends.

"Today, I came out a little cautious, but after the first game I was fine. I’m feeling a little pressure. I feel pressure all the time, but that’s o.k. People like me strive on pressure," said Bogomolov with an added wink of confidence. "The Orange Bowl is very special to me. I want to do well here so badly. Last time I played (Moukhometov), he was sick, so I knew I didn’t see him at his best."

In the semifinals of the 1999 World Youth Cup, the Davis Cup equivalent for players 16 and younger, Bogomolov defeated Moukhometov at No. 1 singles and eventually led the United States its first WYC title. Born in Moscow and a resident of South Florida for over a decade, Bogomolov is now an American citizen and has represented the United States in tennis for the past five year.

Bogomolov grew up in the same neighborhood as Mouhkometov until his family left the country when Alex was nine-years-old. Alex’s father, who recently returned to Russia, is currently Mouhkometov’s coach at the same club, Dinamo, where the two learned tennis as youngsters.

Bogomolov knows very little of his next opponent, who has steadily progressed through his first major junior championship.

Monaco, a seventeen-year-old Argentine, defeated No. 6 seed Bruno Echagaray in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-1. A sleeper in the draw, Monaco has never played an ITF junior event before and gained entry into the Orange Bowl based on his professional ranking. He trains in Spain with Emilo Sanchez, who was the runner-up here in 1983.

The other Boys’ 18s semifinal pits No. 5 seed Robin Soderling against No. 11 Santiago Gonzalez. Soderling is 2-0 against Gonzalez, defeating him in straight sets in the second round of the US Open boys’ singles after going three sets with him a week earlier at the Canadian Open.

In girls’ action, No. 4 seed Marion Bartoli of France defeated No. 5 Ashley Harkleroad of Wesley Chapel, Fla., in a thrilling quarterfinal match, 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Bartoli, the US Open girls’ singles champion, will face No. 2 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in a rematch of the US Open final. Kuznetsova, who also trains in Spain under Sanchez, defeated No. 6 Jelena Jankovic, the reigning Australian Open girls’ champion, in the quarterfinals.

The other girls’ 18s semifinal match features defending champion Vera Zvonareva of Russia against her compatriot, unseeded Anna Bastrikova.

The finals of the Boys’ and Girls’ 16s events and the Boys’ and Girls’ 18s doubles will also be played Saturday.
