| World no. 1's capture Trofeo Bonfiglio |
World No.1 players Brian Dabul (ARG) and Barbora Strycova (CZE) triumphed today at the Trofeo Bonfiglio.
Australian Open champion Barbora Strycova defeated top seed Myriam Casanova (SUI) to capture her second Grade A title of the year. The Plzen native went into the final knowing that she would have to produce her best tennis to beat the Swiss player who had beaten her twice already this year, and denied her the Banana Bowl title in March. Strycova started strongly, breezing through the first set 61 and held her nerve when Casanova fought back to take the second set to a tiebreak. Strycova took the title in straight sets, 7-2 in the tiebreak.
Strycova made a clean sweep of titles when she partnered Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) to defeat Casanova and Elke Clijsters (BEL) in the girls' doubles final 62 75.
The boys' singles final was an epic. Both Dabul and Lamine Ouahab were fighting for their first Grade A titles, both players had reached the final of three Grade A events during their careers. Ouahab took the first set 7-5 in a tiebreak but lost the momentum in the second to let Dabul level the match at one set all 62. The third set produced the best tennis from both players, the crowd were on the edge of their seats when Dabul made the crucial break late in the third set to take the match 8-6. The Italian Open title is the perfect preparation to Dabul campaign for the Roland Garros title, having been denied the crown in the 2001 final by Carlos Cuadrado (ESP).
The boys' doubles title went to Aussie's Adam Feeney and Chris Guccione who defeated ITF team members Komlavi Logo (TOG) and Christopher Westerhof (RSA) 75 63.
