| Osaka Mayor's Cup, World Super Junior Championships |
Rain disrupted play again at the Osaka Mayor’s Cup today but not before the top 5 seeds in both the boys’ and girls’ singles draws had secured their places in the third round.
Gilles Muller (LUX) and Janko Tipsarevic YUG) who are not only battling it out for the title in Osaka, but also for the No.1 spot in the ITF Junior World Rankings, both continued to put on impressive displays of power, winning their matches in straight sets. After his match Gilles Muller commented that the most important point of the match for him was "the 2nd set when I broke his serve".
Three seeds fell in the boys’ singles today, Chris Kwon (USA) was beaten 76(8) 06 62 by Taichi Wada (JPN). Lars Poerschke (GER), the No.14 seed was defeated convincingly 62 61 by Jaco Mathew (IND) and the No.11 seed Emile Petit (FRA) lost to the Japanese No.1 Atsuo Ogawa 36 63 75. After the match Ogawa summed up the match and his recent improvement:
"I lost my concentration temporarily because of a problem with the judgement, but I managed to overcome because of the spectators encouragement. I spent 2 months abroad playing in foreign tournaments. This experience improved both my physical and mental performance. During the match today I felt very confident in my abilities. I felt that if I played my best I would win. My opponent was a strong clay court player and stayed behind the baseline. This gave me the opportunity to control the game and hit more winning shots. The rallies throughout the match were quite long allowing me to get more experience. I will try my best tomorrow. "
In the girls’ singles only one seed didn’t make it through to the third round, Pichaya Laosirichon, the No.12 from Thailand, lost in straight sets 64 64 to Kazusa Ito of Japan.
In the doubles the No.1 seeds in the boys’, Stephan Amritraj (USA) and Matthew Emery (USA), and their counterparts in the girls’ draw, Eva Birnerova (CZE) and Matea Mezak (CRO) both secured their places in the quarter finals.
