| No.1 seed exits on Day 1 |
Heavy rain in Brazil caused the cancellation of the majority of matches in the boys' draw on day one of the 2003 Banana Bowl. Fortunately most of the girls' matches were completed before the rain arrived and the big news was the defeat of girls' No.1 seed Beier Ko (CAN). It appears the pressure of being in the top spot may have been just too much for Ko to deal with as she fell in straight sets to 14 year old Hungarian Agnes Szavay 64 61.
Elsewhere in the girls' draw all seeds in action faired well, No.3 seed Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR) swept through to the second round with a 60 61 win over Brazilian wildcard Juliana Costa. A Canadian fairing slightly better than compatriot Ko was no. 4 seed Aleksandra Wozniak who progressed without dropping a game in her match against another Brazilan wildcard Luiza Portella. Other seeds safely through in the girls' draw include No.5 Krysty Marcio (USA), No.9 Maryori Franco (COL), No.11 Soledad Esperon (ARG), No.12 Aliona Tsutskova (UKR), No.13 Megan Moulton-Levy (USA), No.15 Megan Falcon (USA) and No.16 Katarina Zoricic (CAN).
Of the few boys' matches that were completed, one of ITFjuniors.com's tips for the title, Jorge Aguilar (CHI), secured his place in the next round. The Chilian No.4 seed completed a straight sets victory over Juan de Armas from Venezuela 75 63. Another seed in action. No.11 Nestor Briceno (USA) who made light work of his first round opponent, Luiz Diaz Barriga (MEX), claiming victory 62 61. The first seed to come unstuck in the boys' draw was Timothy Neilly, No.15 seed from the USA. Despite taking the first set 62 in his match again Guy Thomas (GBR) Neilly was unable to close out the match in the second set tie break, which Thomas eventually secured 7-4. Thomas then went on to win a close third set 75, thus causing the first upset in the boys' draw. The rest of the seeds will be hoping to do better on day 2.
