Day three of the Asia/Oceania World Junior Tennis Pre-Qualifying event saw the knock-out draws decided in the boys’ event.
Pakistan produced the upset of the day with a convincing victory over third seeds Sri Lanka to claim first place in Group C ahead of the Play-off stages. Syed Nofil Kaleem and Muzammil Murtaza (PAK) played some outstanding tennis to give Pakistan an unassailable lead in the tie. Sri Lanka will now face off against Saudi Arabia for a chance to play Vietnam in the semifinals.
Vietnam has so far lived up to its top seed billing, progressing through to the first to sixth Play-off without the loss of a set. Dac Thien Nguyen has dropped just three games in helping his team secure their spot in the play-off stages. Second seed Singapore also qualify top of their group. Syria and Pakistan will battle it out for a spot in the semifinals against Singapore.
Sri Lanka and Vietnam have both already booked their places in the girl’s event for the Final Qualifying event in Kuching, Malaysia in April, however they are currently locked in battle for a chance to claim first place at the pre-qualifying event. Play was suspended due to rain with the tie poised at 1-1 with Vietnam drawing first blood in the deciding doubles. Play will resume on Thursday.
