Guatemala has had a very successful semifinal run in both the girls' and boys' events of the 2013 North/Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying event that is taking place in the Dominican Republic’s capital city of Santo Domingo. Their rivals in both semifinals were the same, Costa Rica, and the result identical, 2-1.
Guatemala’s rival in the boys' event final will be Aruba while the girls will face the hosts Dominican Republic in the other final.
In the boys' semifinals, Guatemala and Costa Rica battled for a place in the final in a very even tie that was decided in the doubles match. Guatemala's Christopher Vleeming won his singles match, and Kevin Hernandez, who had lost out to Sebastian Quiros, defeated the Costa Ricans Quiros and Diego Chavarria convincingly with a 62 64 score and booked a place in the final.
In the other boys' semifinal Aruba whitewashed Panama 3-0, dropping only nine sets across the three matches.
In the girls' semifinal, Guatemala defeated Costa Rica helped by an in-form Karla Cordero, who won her singles match and paired with Laura Lopez to earn the decisive point 63 76(5) and reach the final of the event.
In the other semifinal, the hosts Dominican Republic delighted the crowd by beating their fellow islanders Puerto Rico in a very comprehensive way, 3-0, and reaching the final that will take place on Saturday. Laura Quezada and Penelope Abreu secured the pass by beating Ana Leonard and Julieanne Bou respectively. Then, Quezada and Alizia Hernandez completed the whitewash by beating Leonard and Andrea Roque 64 62.
