Girls and boys from 38 nations have been participating in this year’s ITF Junior Open in Linz which marks the 18th time an ITF event is taking place in Upper Austria. Linz is a clay court event with all matches being held at ATZ tennis center. Having been granted G1 status it has been Austria’s largest Junior tournament for numerous years and the country’s only ITF event of that category. Therefore each year many local and regional talents come here in search of valuable ITF ranking points as well as ITF circuit experience.
There have been many winners of the ITF Junior Open who have gone on to have great success in their future careers. Former men’s world number one and Wimbledon and US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) reached the event’s final in 1999. On the girl’s side WTA number ones Jelena Jankovic (SRB) and Dinara Safina (RUS), as well as current second ranked Agnieszka Radwanska (POL), displayed their talents by winning at Austria’s Grade 1 ITF event.
