Last tie 1-3 February 2013
Switzerland were handed possibly the toughest challenge of the first round when they were drawn against reigning champions Czech Republic. In Roger Federer's absence, it was left to Stan Wawrinka to lead the Swiss team. He got the hosts off to a great start winning the first point for his nation but Tomas Berdych leveled the tie. Onto the doubles on day two and Wawrinka partnered Marco Chiudinelli against Berdych and Lukas Rosol. The Swiss pair forced an unlikely final set, and this is where the tie really began. In what became the longest rubber in Davis Cup history, the Czechs eventually converted their 13th match point to win 24-22. When Berdych defeated Wawrinka in four sets the next day, the Swiss team's valiant defiance had been broken and the Czechs were through to the quarterfinals.
History
Switzerland's best performance came in 1992, when it finished runner-up. Led by Marc Rosset and Jakob Hlasek, the Swiss lost 3-1 to a strong American team - made up of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and John McEnroe - in the Final.
