Hungary failed to build on a good start at home to Luxembourg in Budapest, losing four straight rubbers after Attila Balazs had put them ahead in straight sets, ultimately suffering relegation back into Group II after losing 4-1. Gilles Muller starred for Luxembourg, winning the doubles alongside Mike Scheidweiler as well as both of his singles ties, including the decisive fourth rubber 97 in the fifth set.
History
Hungary first played Davis Cup in 1924. It has twice reached the World Group first round, in 1994 and 1996, and also reached the Europe Zone Final in 1976 and 1978.
