Cuba and hosts Puerto Rico secured first place in their respective Pools on the penultimate day of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group III event.

Cuba, who arrived at this tournament with a ranking of No. 117 – the second highest of all the participants – completed a clean sweep in Pool A with three victories in all three rubbers against Panama on Friday.

“In Cuba we train hard, we try hard, to play Davis Cup. We have come here to take on every team  and now we want to move forward,” said Randy Blanco.

In Pool B, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica starred in a battle of high intensity to decide who would lead the group into the play-offs.

Puerto Rico triumphed 2-1 and will play Bahamas, who had secured second place in Pool A, in the promotion play-off on Saturday.

A loss for Costa Rica means a promotion play-off encounter against Cuba.
