Hungary and Turkey were promoted to Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group II for 2015.
On the final day’s play of Europe Zone Group III, Hungary and Turkey each won their promotional play-offs to earn promotion to the next level.
Hosts and top seeds Hungary took on fourth seeds Georgia in their play-off. Gergely Madarasz led the hosts out and he took on George Tsivadze. Madarasz won a tight opening set 75 before closing the match out for a 75 60 win.
That left Hungary’s No. 1 Marton Fucsovics, a former junior No. 1, the opportunity to close out the tie when he faced Aleksandre Metreveli. There was no problem for the Hungarian who comfortably won 61 61 to seal Hungary’s 2-0 victory.
Turkey were the surprise of the Group because they came in as an unseeded team and left with promotion. Cem Ilkel led the Turkish out in the first rubber of their play-off against third seeded Macedonia and he took on Tomislav Jotovski. Ilkel won a close opening set 64 but Jotovski fought back, taking the second set in a tiebreak 7-2.
Ilkel won a close third set to seal a 64 67(2) 64 victory and hand Turkey a 1-0 lead in the tie. That left Turkish No. 1 Marsel Ilhan with the opportunity to seal the tie as he took on Dimitar Grabul. It was another close match, going the distance, and Ilhan won the first set 75. Grabul bounced back immediately, taking the second set 63.
The top Turkish player sealed a fantastic week for his nation as he claimed the final set in a 75 36 64 victory, sending Turkey up to Europe/Africa Zone Group II for next year.
