Top seeds and hosts Hungary continued their push for promotion on the second day of Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Europe Zone Group III.

After recording simple victories on Day 1, there was no let-up from the Hungarians when they faced Liechtenstein. Gergely Madarasz opened proceedings for the hosts with a 63 61 victory over Liechtenstein’s Timo Kranz in what proved to be the closest rubber in the tie.

Marton Fucsovics, Hungary’s No.1, matched his excellent performance from the opening day when he overcame Vital Leuch 60 61 to give Hungary a 2-0 victory. The hosts did not let up in the doubles however, and Viktor Filipenko and Levente Godry recorded a 60 60 win over Robin Forster and Christian Meier to wrap up the tie.

This was only the second 60 60 victory in Hungary’s Davis Cup history and their win today ensured they would finish on top of Pool A.

In Pool B, Macedonia continued their charge for promotion with a 3-0 win over Albania. Shendrit Deari won the opening rubber 62 61 against Arber Sulstarova before Dimitar Grabul ensured victory for Macedonia with a 60 61 win over Genajd Shypheja.

Bojan Jankulovski and Tomislav Jotovski were chosen to seal the 3-0 victory in the doubles for Macedonia and they did so, defeating Rei Pelushi and Shypheja 60 62.

Yesterday’s shock winners Turkey were back in action on Day 2 as they looked to book their place in the promotional play-offs by finishing atop Pool D. They took on a San Marino side that featured Domenico Vicini, the 42-year-old who holds every single one of San Marino’s Davis Cup records and has been playing in the competition since 1993.

Baris Erguden was handed a singles role for Turkey after impressing in yesterday’s doubles and he did not disappoint, overcoming Diego Zonzini 61 63 in the opening rubber. Marsel Ilhan, who has competed in Grand Slams and is the highest ranked player in this Zone Group event, then sealed victory for Turkey with a 62 61 victory over Marco de Rossi.

The doubles saw Cem Ilkel partner Anil Yuksel for Turkey and they faced De Rossi and Vicini for San Marino. In another one-sided rubber, the Turkish pair won 61 62 to seal a 3-0 win and book Turkey’s place on top of Pool D.

Georgia ensured they would finish on top of Pool C when they defeated Iceland 3-0. Aleksandre Bakshi took the opening rubber for Georgia 62 62 against Raj Kumar Bonifacius in a match that was tougher than the scoreline suggests.

Giorgi Javakhishvili then sealed the victory for Georgia with a 60 61 win over Magnus Gunnarsson before Bakshi and Javakhishvili defeated Bonifacius and Hinrik Helgason 61 62 in the doubles to secure a 3-0 win for Georgia.
