Italy have traditionally been much stronger on home soil than when travelling, having won just two of their last eight away ties in Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, and face a tricky test in the World Group first round tie against Argentina in Mar del Plata.

Fabio Fognini is currently enjoying the best run of results in his career as he has reached a career high of world No. 16, winning titles last year in Hamburg and Stuttgart, and will be working alongside a full-strength Italian side to achieve victory.

“Argentina is a great, great team,” he said. “They played two times the Final in the last few years and it’s going to be really difficult for us to go there but at the moment we are a very good team so hopefully everything can go our way.”

The hosts, however, will be without one of their talisman of previous years, David Nalbandian, as they look to win in the first round for a 13th straight year.

Fognini seems to relish playing in the competition having won ten of his 13 singles rubbers and helped his side reach the World Group quarterfinals last time around, some 15 years after their last appearance at that stage.

With Andreas Seppi, Filippo Volandri and Simone Bolelli making up the rest of Corrado Barazzutti’s team there is plenty of experience to handle the pressures of playing away.

“I think we have a chance for sure but we play in Argentina, it’s never easy to play there…so we will try to do our best and see what happens.”
