Russia and Sweden stay in Zone Group I

The outcome was the same for both teams but the manner in which Russia and Sweden secured their place in Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group I was entirely different.

Russia cruised through to a 5-0 whitewash of South Africa at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow after Andrey Kuznetsov and Konstantin Kravchuk defeated Dean O'Brien and Jacob de Klerk repectively.

Kuznetsov prevailed 62 63 while Kravchuk was on court for just 26 minutes before his opponent retired with a knee injury incurred on Friday.

The tie between Scandinavian rivals Sweden and Denmark proved to be one to remember. Trailling 2-1 after the first two day's play, Sweden had to win both reverse singles rubbers if they were to complete a sixth comeback from 0-2 down.

Denmark meanwhile needed just one win from the two singles rubber on offer to record a memorable win against their old foe.

The fourth rubber was a classic encounter between Markus Eriksson and Frederik Nielsen with the latter pulling through 63 36 67(1) 64 97 to put the pressure on 17-year-old Elias Ymer in the decisive fifth rubber.

The Swedish junior rose to the occasion by taking down Martin Pedersen 76(3) 76(8) 46 75 and in so doing clinched the comeback for the hosts.

The draw for 2014 Europe/Africa Zone Groups I and II takes place at 12:00 GMT on Monday.
