Nicola Pietrangeli knows a thing or two about competing in team tennis competitions and the Italian has foretold that the island location for the 2013 Fed Cup Final will bring good fortune for the hosts.

Pietrangeli, who holds the record for, among other things, the most Davis Cup ties played, was speaking at a press conference promoted by Tennis Torres Sassari when he said: “Sardinia always brings us luck, and when I say ‘we’ I mean Italian tennis.

“This tie that will be played in a few days is further evidence that Italian tennis, especially over the last few years in which we have been led by the women, is in optimal health.”

FIT President Angelo Binaghi, who was also present at the press conference, added that tennis in Sardinia was born in Sassari, which is where the Fed Cup trophy had been on display in the centre of the court during a basketball match between Dinamo Sassari and Cantu.

With line-ups due to be announced on Wednesday, the build-up to this year’s Fed Cup Final is well and truly under way. The Final kicks off on Saturday 2 November. Follow all of the action live on FedCup.com.
