Colombia and Ecuador have both named their teams to play in September's Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-offs.

For the Colombians, it will be a formidable and unsurprising quartet that takes on the challenge of Japan in Tokyo.

Mauricio Haddad has nominated Santiago Giraldo, Alejandro Falla, Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah for what could be an historic tie for the Latin Americans.

Colombia has never made it through to the World Group despite falling at the same stage against USA in 2010 in a tight encounter in Bogota.

But this year's play-offs represent a real opportunity for the South American side if they can perform to their potential.

Japan's fate will largely be determined by the inclusion of Kei Nishikori in the squad. Without him the home team will face a tough test against Colombia, who in Giraldo and Falla have two recognised singles players and a solid doubles duo in the shape of Cabal and Farah.

Colombia's neighbours, Ecuador, have also named their side to play Switzerland in Neuchatel on 13-15 September.

Julio-Cesar Campozano will lead his team into battle against a Swiss team that contains world No. 10 Stanislas Wawrinka.

The world No. 279 will be backed up by Emilio Gomez (ranked No. 351), Roberto Quiroz (634) and Davis Cup debutant Gonzalo Escobar.

Ecuador's captain Raul Viver said: "Campozano, Gomez and Quiroz have been the base of the team in recent ties and Escobar, who recently graduated from University, started very well in Futures tournaments here (he was a runner-up at the F1 Futures in Ecuador) and his results and attitude have shown me enough to put him in the team."
