In the driving rain of San Marino, Greece and Norway have been promoted to Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group II for 2014 after they both won their promotional play-offs on Saturday.
With Greece taking on Macedonia and Norway playing Georgia, neither of the promotional play-offs had finished the opening rubber when the rain first came down, forcing play to be suspended and nerves to be frayed.
Macedonia recovered quicker than their opponents after the rain delay and they caused a shock when Predrag Rusevski defeated Markos Kalovelonis 46 64 63. In the other play-off, Norway had taken the lead with Stian Boretti defeating George Tsivadze 62 75.
Greece’s No.1, Alexandros Jakupovic, levelled the tie for Greece when he defeated Shendrit Deari 75 62. Meanwhile, Norway had sealed their victory when Joachim Bjerke defeated Aleksandre Metreveli 64 61 to give Norway an unassailable 2-0 lead.
The tie between Greece and Macedonia was the only one of the day to brave the rain for a doubles rubber with both nations desperate to decide the tie on Saturday. The Greeks took the opening set 63 and then sealed victory taking the second 64.
Montenegro took on hosts San Marino while Malta faced Turkey to decide who would finish in 5th and 7th place but both ties finished 1-1.
The only other tie to see a winner was between Liechtenstein and Albania with Liechtenstein easily triumphing 2-0. The other tie played on the day saw Iceland take on Armenia, and that also finished 1-1.
