Egypt looking for home success in Zone Group III

Clay sweep

Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Africa Zone Group III takes place this week at the Smash Tennis Academy in Cairo, Egypt, with 13 teams bidding for a chance to earn promotion to Europe/Africa Zone Group II for the 2014 competition.

Morocco, Madagascar and hosts Egypt were all relegated to Zone Group III last year and will be looking to bounce back and make a swift return to Zone Group II. Zimbabwe narrowly missed out on promotion last year, and will be hopeful of producing a strong showing and challenging again this year.

Morocco and Egypt will be the favourites going into the event as they are the only teams who can boast four players who all have rankings. Egypt’s Mohamed Safwat holds the highest ranking of any player involved in the Group at No. 320. Meanwhile, Algeria will be hoping to do better than last year, when they finished bottom of the group.

Egypt have been drawn in Pool D alongside Nigeria, Botswana, and Zambia. The winners of that pool will play the winners of Pool B which contains Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Kenya. Pool A will see Morocco, Algeria, and Cameroon fighting for top place, with the victors playing the winners of Pool C, one of Madagascar, Namibia, and Rwanda.
