The 2013 Australian Open is underway in Melbourne and the defending champion and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic is focused on defending his title. Should he succeed, it would be his fourth in Melbourne. However, the Serbian has also found time to speak about what the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas meant for his career ahead of the tie that Serbia will play on 1-3 February against Belgium in Charleroi.

“Davis Cup title came in the right moment,” said Djokovic, remembering his 2010 Davis Cup triumph against France. “I believe that title, that feeling of sharing one of the biggest titles in our sport with my team for our country, in our country, was one of the best feelings I experienced as a tennis player on the court.”

“That was a great confidence boost and helped me to, afterwards, believe in myself, in my abilities on the court more,” added the Serbian number one in reference to the unbelievable 2011 season in which became a commanding power in tennis by winning 70 matches out of 76, marking the beginning of a period of increased dominance in the circuit for the 25-year-old.

The Serbian has already stated that he intends to play Davis Cup in 2013 following a conversation with Serbia´s captain, Bogdan Obradovic, during the past Olympics in Wimbledon. Then, Djokovic made it clear that, provided he was fit, he would be available to play for his country again. This plan remains unchanged.

“The plan is to play Davis Cup for Serbia,” replied the Serbian to questions about his availability. Although he also pointed out that the physical toll of the first Grand Slam of the year does not allow him to give a 100% confirmation. “Right now I can´t confirm. I don´t know what´s going to happen in two weeks´ time, as long as I play the tournament. I'm going to try to get as far as I can in Melbourne.”

Serbia made history in 2010 when a team formed by Novak Djokovic, Janko Tipsarevic, Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic lifted the Davis Cup after beating France 3-2 in Belgrade. It was Serbia’s first title.
