The International Touring Team to North, Central and South America takes place towards the end of the year when the Junior season draws towards a close with a series of prestigious events in America. The main events are the Grade 1 events at the Yucutan Cup and Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships prior to one of the final big tournament of the year on the ITF Junior Cirucit at the Orange Bowl.
The 2012 Team
The team, who competed in three tournaments in Mexico and the USA comprised two boys, Mazen Osama (EGY) and Guy-Orly Iradukunda (BDI) and four girls, Sandra Samir (EGY), Ilze Hattingh (RSA), Lesedi Sheya Jacobs (NAM) and Theresa Alison Van Zyl (RSA).
Osama had a good start to the tour, reaching the singles quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals at the XXVI Yucatan Cup. Amongst the girls, Sandra Samir, seeded 12th in the Yucatan Cup, defeated team mate Theresa Van Zyl in the second round and then, without dropping a set, made her way to the quarterfinals, when she lost to American second seed Sachia Vickery. In the girls' doubles Ilze Hattingh reached the semifinal.
At the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships, Mazen Osama once again stood out from the team by reaching the semifinals, where he lost to eighth seed Chilean Christian Garin.
The team then moved on to the Orange Bowl where the heightened level of competition with some of the best junior players from across the globe meant a fantastic opportunity for the team to test themselves and gain experience of a big event even if there were some disappointing results.
The team travelled with coaches Ivan Molina (COL) and Dermot Sweeney (ZAM).
