| Segodo and Vias dominate in Benin and Togo |
Benin’s Tunde Segodo and America's Ines Vias were the undefeatable players in this year’s West African 18 & under Circuit, capturing both singles titles in their respective events.
Nearly 70 players took part in the two tournaments, which took place in Benin and Togo from 4-15 September.
Second seed Segodo overcame top seed and attendee of the ITF/CAT Francophone Training Centre in Dakar, Senegal, William Bushamuka (COD) in the final of both tournaments, firstly winning on home soil 26 63 61 and then 16 64 61 in Togo.
The unseeded Vias knocked out top seed Nour Azzouz (EGY) in the semifinals 76(2) 64 and only dropped one set on the way to the final in Benin, where she beat Turkish second seed Yagmur Akdemir 61 60. Vias was in even better form in Togo, only dropping three games on the way to the final, where she faced revenge seeking Azzouz. However, Vias continued her victorious run and took her second gold medal with a 62 60 win.
Evidently not satisfied with the two singles titles, Vias also bagged the two doubles titles with partner Sarah Adegoke (NGR). The pair triumphed over top seeds Akdemir and Azzouz 62 62 in Benin and then Azzouz and Selenay Heper (TUR) 62 64 in Togo.
The Malian duo of Abdoulaye Bagayoko and Seydou Diallo took gold in both of the boys’ doubles events, firstly overcoming locals Segodo and Kevin Zannou 57 61 [106] and then Nigerians Edward Christopher Anefu and Abubakar Sadiq Tswako 64 63 in the second tournament in Togo.
