| Chung and Ostapenko triumph for Touring team |
The International 18 & U ITF/GSDF Team to Europe members proved the ones to beat at the tournament in Offenbach, Germany after Hyeon Chung (KOR) took home the boys’ singles trophy, Jorge Brian Panta Herreros (PER) partnered Christian Garin (CHI) to lift the boys’ doubles crown and Ilka Csoregi (ROU) and Zarah Razafimahatratra (MAD) combined to win the girls’ doubles title.
There was further success for the team when Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko came through qualifying to win the girls’ title at the 48th Astrid Bowl in Belgium, overcoming home favourite Kimberley Zimmermann in the final. Bolivia’s Maria Ines Deheza couldn’t quite make it a clean sweep for the touring team as she and partner Elke Limmens (BEL) fell in the girls’ doubles final to Francoise Abanda (BOL) and Sachia Vickery (USA) 64 62.
During the eight-week tour there were also runner-up performances from Wayne Montgomery (RSA) and Temur Izmailov (UZB). Montgomery had got the tour off to a good start when he finished as runner-up to Laurent Lokoli (FRA) at the 34th Torneo Internationale “Citta di Santa Croce”, while Izmailov produced his best result at the Trofeo Bonfiglio by reaching the final where he lost out after a hard-fought battle to No. 3 seed Gianluigi Quinzi (ITA) 62 67 61.
The tour encompasses a week’s training in Pisa, Italy, followed by seven Grade A and 1 tournaments in Europe including Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Montserrat Gonzalez (PAR) produced the best result in Paris, when she reached the girls’ doubles final with partner Beatriz Haddad Maia (BRA). The duo just missed out on lifting the trophy after losing the match tiebreak 46 46 [10-8].
Gonzalez produced a notable upset at Wimbledon when she knocked out the No. 4 seed Anna Danilina (KAZ) 67 64 64 in the second round before falling in the 3rd round to No. 16 seed Ana Konjuh (CRO). Montgomery also recorded another good result, reaching the semifinals of the boys’ doubles with Evan Hoyt (GBR).
The team is financed by the Grand Slam Development Fund, providing players not only with the opportunity to take part in top level international competition but also the invaluable experience of travelling abroad as part of a team under the guidance of an ITF/GSDF coach. This year, four ITF/GSDF team coaches accompanied the team: Ivan Molina (COL), Frank Zlesak (CZE), Roberta Burzagli (BRA) and Dermot Sweeney (ZAM).
The players included: Boys: Herkko Pollanen (FIN), Karim Hossam (EGY), Temur Ismailov ( UZB), Wayne Montgomery (RSA), Hyeon Chung (KOR), Hassan Ndayishimiye (BDI), Jorge Brian Panta Herreros (PER), Guillermo Nunez (CHI) Girls: Maria Ines Deheza (BOL), Ilka Csoregi (ROU), Montserrat Gonzalez (PAR), Aldila Sutjiadi (INA), Jelena Ostapenko (LAT), Mai El Kamash (EGY), Su Jeong Jang ( KOR), Zarah Razafimahatratra (MAD)
