African Junior Championships continue in Egypt
Three players from West Africa have earned their places in the quarterfinals of the boys’ 14 & under event. ITF team member, Antoine Gbadoe (TOG) ended Burundi’s Saidi Nkurunziza’s hopes of entering the quarterfinals with a 64 64 victory. Isaac Nortey (GHA) came through a hard fought battle against fifth seed Sherif Makhlouf (EGY) 64 67(6) 75, saving match points in both the second and third sets. Paterne Diangathebe (GAB) completes the hatrick of West African players in the quarterfinals, after beating Andritoavina Ratsimandresy (MAD) 64 36 64.

South African fifth seed Zani Barnard’s hopes were dashed by local Ahlam Shawkat denying her a place in the girls’ 14 & under quarterfinals after a 64 63 defeat. All other seven seeds have progressed through to the quarterfinals.

In the boys’ 16 & under, the biggest upset came as Ruben Alberts (RSA) knocked out second seed and warm up finalist Omar Argoun (EGY) 63 62. The remaining seeds in the draw all progressed through to the quarterfinals.

Moroccan Lina Qostal is the only non seeded player to reach the quarterfinals as she beat eighth seed, Habiba Shaker (EGY) 62 75 in the girls’ 16 & under event.
