| South Africa and Egypt dominate AJC warm up event |
With South Africa and Egypt clinching two titles each in the 14 and 16 & under warm up tournament, it looks as though the team trophy at the 35th ITF/CAT African Junior Championships could be a closely contested affair.
Last month Karim Hossam (EGY) and Ilze Hattingh (RSA) won the titles at the 18 & under African Junior Championships in South Africa. These results, along with those of the 14 and 16 & under events will count towards the overall team trophy.
The warm up tournament, which provides players with the opportunity to acclimatise to the conditions in Egypt, came to a close on Sunday at Al Solaimaneyah City. The African Junior Championships will start on Tuesday at the same venue.
In the boys' 16 & under event, second seed Omar Gamal El Din (EGY) defeated compatriot Omar Argoun in a one sided match 61 61. Hattingh continued her dominance in the 16 & under girls’ event with a convincing 62 61 victory over local favourite Sandra Samir (EGY).
Fourth seed in the 14 & under event, Calvin Jordaan (RSA,) took his revenge against Chisomo Lumeta (MAW) overcoming him 63 61, having lost to him earlier in the year at the Southern African Junior Championships. In another all-Egyptian final, Hana Mortagy beat Habiba Lasheen 63 64 in the 14 & under girls’ event.
