ITF Asia 14 & Under Development Championships 2012- Division 2
For the first time in the history of the event the Vietnam Tennis Federation hosted the ITF Asia 14 & Under Development Championships 2012 – Division 2 which ended on the 16 of January 2012. The Vietnam Tennis Federation organised a closing ceremony with a farewell dinner for all the players, where the prize distribution took place. This year’s championships attracted a total of 13 nations, totaling 62 participants. The championships consisted of two tournaments and the feed-in consolation format was used, resulting in players from participating nations of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and hosts Vietnam playing matches every day. There was also a West Asia Team made up of players from Syria, UAE, Iran and Jordan who performed well at the Asian Group 4 event last year.
According to the new format introduced to Division 2 for the first time this year, country rankings at the end of the event were based on the best three results in singles and best three results in doubles (which must include at least one result from that female in singles as well as one individual result on female’s doubles). Following the new format ITF Players are also eligible to achieve a country ranking and their points are counted on the same basis. This points system determines who qualifies to be on the Division 2 ITF Team that will participate in the ITF Asia U14 Development Championships Division 1 event to be held on 04 March in Philippines. At the end of the Championships one country will be promoted to Division 1.
The Malaysian players proved too good for their opponents, Hao Sheng Koay and Yus Syazlin Yusri won both tournaments respectively in the boy’s singles and girls’ singles events. In the boy’s doubles, once again Koay paired with country member Adb Rahim were victorious in both tournaments, whereas in the first tournament of the girls’ doubles host nation Vietnam’s Tiffany Linh Nguyen and Thu Phuong Nguyen kept the winning title at home. In the second tournament, Yusri and partner Nuri Nabila Roslan from Malaysia won the girls’ doubles in two straight sets.
ITF Development Officer for Asia, Suresh Menon, was very impressed with the Vietnam Tennis Federation and Ho Chi Minh City Tennis Association for successfully organizing the event especially at such notice. Despite being the first time organizing an international event, the organizers at the Hoang Thein Tennis Club did an outstanding job of organizing the event.
Following the new format this year, with outstanding results, Malaysia was promoted to Division 1. The Division 2 event and West Asian team is financed by the Grand Slam Development Fund ( GSDF), providing players not only with the opportunity to take part in top level international competition but also the invaluable experience of travelling abroad as part of a team under the guidance of an ITF coach.
