| Burundi wins the 2012 East African Junior Championships |
Burundi was crowned champion at the 2012 ITF/CAT East Africa Junior Championships, which finished on the weekend in Bujumbura, Burundi. The event saw the participation of six countries including Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan and Tanzania battling it out for the team trophy and qualification to the ITF/CAT African Junior Championships, to be held in Cairo, Egypt from 10 to 14 April 2012.
Burundi was the winner of the team trophy, followed closely by Kenya and Tanzania. The boys played a round robin format followed by a knock out competition. In the individual results for the boys, in 12 & under, Hailemekayel Birgza (ETH) won the gold medal beating Sule Omari (TAN) 63 46 103. In 14 & under, there was an all-Burundian final, with Saidi Nkurunziza beating Kabura Shabani 67 61 64. Guy Orly Iradukunda (BDI) was victorious in the 16 & under category beating Ismael Ruwa Changawa (KEN) with a 57 60 61 win.
Due to the low number of girls participating, they played a round robin competition throughout the tournament. In the 12 & under category, Kotecha Sneha (KEN) took gold with Aisha Niyonkuru and Sada Nahima from Burundi finishing second and third respectively. In the 14 & under age group, Mariam Mujawimana (BDI) took gold, Sahra Bura (TAN) finish second and third place went to Mugisha Alida Bella (BDI). In the girls’ 16 & under, Yahia Samah (SUD) took the gold medal and Mbaya Stephanie (KEN) took silver.
These Championships coincided with the opening ceremony of the ITF/CAT East African Training Centre. Dave Miley, ITF Director of Development, Tarak Cherif, President of the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT), Patrick Gichira, Vice-President of CAT, officials from other East African National Federations as well as many local dignitaries, including Senate President, Mr. Gabriel Ntisezerana and Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Mr. Jean Jacques Nyimirimo and NOC officials attended the ceremony.
