| South Africa on top in ITF/CAT Southern African Junior Championships |
South Africa was the victorious team at the 2012 ITF/CAT Southern African Junior Championships last week, with Zimbabwe second and Mauritius third. The championships, for players aged 12 & under, 14 & under and 16 & under, took place in Windhoek, Namibia and featured 38 Girls and 51 Boys. Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe competed for the team trophy and qualification to the ITF/CAT African Junior Championships, to be held in Cairo, Egypt from 10 to 14 April 2012.
In the individual results, the girls 16 & under category saw local player Sedi Jacobs (NAM) in the singles final. Jacobs lost in the final to Theresa van Zyl (RSA) 62 60. Janet Koch from South Africa clinched third place. The boys 16 & under was contested between Loyd Harris (RSA) and Courtney Lock (ZIM), with Harris coming out on top 64 26 64. Lebelo Mosehle (LES) took the 3rd place in a play-off with Alwyn Mushonga (ZIM).
Nadine de Villiers (RSA) won the gold medal in the 14 & under girls, beating Randy Randrianasoloson (MAD) 64 63, while Lee Barnard (RSA) took the bronze. In the boys 14 & under, gold went to Chisomo Lumeta (MAW) after beating Jandre Lessing (RSA) 62 63 and Calvin Jordan (RSA) took third place.
Kimberly Bhunu (ZIM) won the girls 12 & under, while Zambia dominated the 12 & under boys section. Yannik Mwiinga (ZAM) beat fellow Zambian Barnabas Kalaba 63 64.
Two venues were used for this event, Central Tennis Club (CTC) and Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW). Thank you to the NTA for all the hospitality and congratulations on a successful event. We look forward to the Southern African Junior Championships in 2013.
