| Success for North American Touring Team |
The ITF/Grand Slam International Junior Touring Team to North America captured four titles on its three-week tour which ended at the weekend. The team comprised seven of the world’s top junior players, who took part in a two-day training camp in Montreal before contesting three major events on the ITF Junior Circuit. The team travelled under the guidance of two ITF team coaches, Ivan Molina (COL) and Roberta Burzagli (BRA).
Liang-Chi Huang (TPE) began the tour by reaching the semifinals of the Canadian Junior Open, losing to eventual winner Julien Obry (FRA) 64 75. Huang went on to win the doubles title with teammate Duilio Beretta (PER), defeating Matthew Kandath and Raymond Sarmiento (USA) 64 63. Veronica Cepede-Royg (PAR) and Cristina Dinu (ROU) reached the girls’ doubles final, losing to Gabriela Dabrowski (CAN) and Paula Ormaechea (ARG) 16 63 [10-3].
After tough opposition at the US Open, there was further success for the team at the final event in Kentucky with Beretta overcoming teammate Nikala Scholtz (RSA) 64 36 64 in the boys’ singles final. Beretta and Huang also won their second doubles title, defeating Shaun Bernstein and Campbell Johnson (USA) 75 61.
At the same event, Cristina Dinu reached the semifinals of the girls’ singles, losing to eventual winner Irina Khromacheva (RUS) 62 46 75. However there was victory in the girls’ doubles for Zsofia Susanyi (HUN), partnered by Mai Grage (DEN), who beat Brooke Bolender (USA) and Ajla Tomljanovic (CRO) 62 46 119.
