| Success for Dzumhur and Zheng in Morocco |
Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia/Herzegovina and China’s Saisai Zheng were the most successful members of the ITF/Grand Slam International 18 & under Touring Team to North Africa which completed its four-week tour of Morocco last weekend.
Dzumhur captured the singles and doubles titles at the opening ITF Grade 3 event in Casablanca, while Zheng followed up a doubles victory in Casablanca by winning singles and doubles at the Grade 3 event in Rabat in week two.
Dzumhur and Zheng were joined in the team by Grant Ive (RSA), Slim Hamza (TUN), Niriantsa Rasolomalala (MAD) and Abigail Tere-Apisah (PNG), with Ilou Lonfo (CIV) and Prince Madema (ZIM) acting as coaches. The team is financed by the ITF through the Grand Slam Development Fund.
The four-week tour kicked off with a five-day training camp at the Club Olympique de Casablanca, which was also the venue for last week’s Grade 1 event. The team enjoyed most success at the start of the tour, with Dzumhur defeating Junior Ore (USA) 63 26 61 in the Casablanca final, before teaming up with Ore for victory in the doubles. Zheng overcame Andrea Gamiz (VEN) 61 36 63 to win in Rabat, and won the first two doubles events with Khristina Blajkevitch (CAN).
Among the other players, Rasolomalala was a semi-finalist in the first event, while Tere-Apisah reached the same stage of week two. There was disappointment for Dzumhur when he had to retire in the semi-finals of the third event in Mohammedia, ending his participation in the circuit.
