| ITF/CAT Southern African Junior Championships 2009 |
The third edition of the Southern African Regional Championships for U/14 and U/16 took place in Pretoria, South Africa from the 8-13th January 2009. The University of Pretoria hosted the 38 boys and 36 girls representing 10 countries. The representation as in previous years was very good. For the first time a draw of 20 players was reached, in this case the U/14 boys.
Rain threatened the completion of the event. Three of the six afternoons of play were lost due to inclement weather. The singles event format was not changed, however due to time constraints the doubles event was shortened to short sets and a super-tiebreaker for the decisive set.
In the U/14 age group Valeria Bhunu (Zim) secured the girls title beating Madrie Le Roux (Rsa) 7-6, 6-4 while Matthew Rossouw (Rsa) claimed first place in the boys U/14 after his 6-4, 6-1 victory over Juilen Min Fa (Mri). Janine Erasmus (Rsa) came out top in the U/16 girls singles beating fellow compatriot Sarah Ive (Rsa) 6-1, 7-5 in the final. In the boys, it was Benji Lock (Zim) who claimed the title in his age group with a win over Marlu Janse Van Vuuren (Rsa) the final scores being 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the South African Tennis Association for all their hard work in making the year’s event a success. We would also like to thank all the countries for their attendance and hope all the qualifiers practice hard in preparation for AJC and do the region proud. See you at AJC.
