Anhelina Kalinina and Iryna Shymanovich with Trophies
The nine players in the International 18 & Under ITF/GSDF Team ended their tour on Sunday 07 July at the Junior Championships Wimbledon. In Belgium, Anhelina Kalinina (UKR) won the girls' singles at the 49th Astrid Bowl Charleroi Belgian International Championships as well as at the 14th Gerry Weber Junior Open (G2). Not only did the unbeatable Ukrainian triumph in singles but, partnered with team member Iryna Shymanovich (BLR), the Eastern European pair also took home the girls' doubles title in The Gerry Weber Junior Open.
The youngest female member, Sandra Samir (EGY), reached the semifinals of the Gerry Weber tournament after defeating Camila Giangreco Campiz (PAR) in the quarterfinals before then losing to the eventual winner, ITF/GSDF team member Kalinina 63 57 06.
In the girls' singles at the Junior Championships, Wimbledon, Kalinina cruised through to the quarterfinals, whilst in the girls' doubles the pairing of Kalinina and Symanovich reached the finals where they were defeated by the second seeds, Belinda Bencic (SUI) and Petra Uberalova (SVK) 62 36 60. Kalinina, ranked 58 on the ITF Junior Rankings when she started the tour, ended the tour with an ITF Junior Ranking of 19. Meanwhile Carolina Alves (BRA), together with non ITF/GSDF-team partner Sara Tomic (AUS), reached the girls' doubles quarterfinals where they faced the number one seeds, Czech pair Barbora Krejcikova (CZE) and Katerina Siniakova (CZE).
Amongst the four boys on the team, Yeong Seok Ki (KOR) showed impressive results reaching the boys' singles quarterfinals as well as the final of the boys' doubles in Offenbach. Wayne Montgomery (RSA) excelled in the sixth week at the Gerry Weber tournament where he ended as finalist against Mexican Lucas Gomez 67(4) 16. Peruvian Brian Panta reached the boys' singles final at the Offenbach Grade 1 tournament, where he then took part in a nail-biting three set match against the third seed Pedro Cachin (ARG) 62 46 16. In doubles, Panta reached the semi-finals of the Charleroi Championships as well as at the AEGON Junior International Roehampton Tournament.
The team is financed by the Grand Slam Development Fund, providing players not only with the opportunity to take part in top level international competition, but also the invaluable experience of travelling abroad as part of a team under the guidance of an ITF/GSDF coach. This year, three ITF/GSDF team coaches accompanied the team: Ivan Molina (COL), Roberta Burzagli (BRA) and Dermot Sweeney (ZAM).
