The Guatemala boys' and girls' teams stormed to victory in the inaugural 12 & U Central American team championships which took place in El Salvador from 7 - 11 July.
The girls beat the host nation 30 and the boys, after an exciting deciding doubles match, won 21.
The bronze medal went to Nicaragua in both events, when the girls defeated the Dominican Republic 2-1 and the boys beat Honduras also 21.
Teams from Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Dominican Republic and the host nation met to contest this regional team championship. Each boys' and girls' team comprised two players and one non-playing captain and each tie included two singles and one doubles match.
Based on their final positions, the teams from Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua have now qualified for the ITF/GSDF 12 & U COTECC Team Masters which will be staged in Monterrey, Mexico in October. They will be joined by the top three boys' and girls' teams from the ITF/GSDF 12 & U Caribbean team championships taking place in Jamaica in September.
The Championships featured educational forums both for the players and the players’ parents with themes covering: ITF Player Protection, ITF Rules of Tennis, Nutrition & Hydration, Children’s Behaviour & the Philosophy of the tournament.
This tournament is supported by the Grand Slam Development Fund and the International Tennis Federation, who created this event to provide more competitive opportunities in this age group.
