The International Tennis Federation Sport Science Research Grant Programme
An Initiative of the ITF Tennis Development Department
It is the aim of the ITF Tennis Development Department as part of our Ten Point Plan to foster Coach Education throughout our member nations. One way in which we believe this can be achieved is through the support of research in the Sport Sciences. In order to do this we wish to organise and foster tennis specific research and knowledge in the areas of: Sports Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Motor Learning, Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology, and Sports Medicine.
The ITF Research Grants Programme supports research specific to tennis, conducted by individuals who are independently, or in conjunction with academic institutions, exploring information, related to the teaching or playing of tennis. The results of this research are then distributed to coaches, parents and players around the world. Our aim is to help players be the best they can be, this research programme will help to pave the way.
It is expected that more substantive and well-supported research will lead to more effective approaches and programs for developing young talent, as well as for satisfying the concerns of recreational participants.
Classification of research assistance
The ITF Research Grants Programme makes available two types of research assistance: Research grants and Publication grants. A detailed description of both types of assistance, including the contractual obligations of the researcher, is provided below.
Research Grants
This type of grant can either take the form of:
a) financial assistance provided to researchers towards the cost of salaries, travel, equipment and/or materials.
b) logistic assistance (no financial assistance provided) to those researchers seeking the help of the ITF in the dispersal of questionnaires, surveys…
In return for the assistance provided, the ITF requires that the researcher upon completion of the project:
1) agree to share the findings with the ITF and its membership.
2) seek publication of research findings in a scientific journal
3) provide some applied articles to the ITF Coaching and Sport Science Review which is published three times a year.
4) be available to present research findings at an ITF Coaching Workshop.
Please also note that any form of printing and/or publication of the results of the research must include an acknowledgement of the ITF 's support.
Publication Grants
This type of grant comes in the form of a financial contribution made to researchers wishing to pursue the translation of tennis-specific materials such as books and/or videos. However, to be eligible for this type of assistance, the researcher must have organised for the publication of the material following its translation and approval by the ITF. No financial assistance will be provided to interested parties without this guarantee.
In return for the assistance provided, the ITF also requires that the publication includes:
1) the ITF logo on the front cover.
2) an acknowledgement of the ITF support in print (ie. Produced in English with the financial assistance of the ITF).
Submission of application:
Should you wish to apply for a grant from the ITF Research Grant Programme, the following information should be provided.
Basic Information
A typed application should include the following information:
The name, address, telephone (office, home, fax) of all investigators, the date of application, the title of proposed research, the completion timetable, and the schedule of tasks and expected date of completion. Please note: a written progress report is expected at the halfway point of your research, as well as a final report at the agreed upon due date.
Technical Information
A maximum 300 word abstract should be submitted to briefly outline the intention and justification of the research. Then in more detail it is necessary to outline the particular area of research, the purpose of the study, a hypothesis (if appropriate), and an explanation of how the proposed research relates to the ITF and will in turn benefit the game of tennis at large. A detailed review of related literature presenting background research done both by you and others in this area should support the basis for this study. The methodology to be used for the project, including an outline of the research procedures and expected results. In addition to this the scientific approach, statistical analysis, and interpretation of data should be fully rationalised.
Cost Analysis
The total estimated cost plus a detailed cost estimate listing the following: all salaries, equipment, travel, supplies and miscellaneous expenses should be provided. All funds received from other sources should be clearly stated. The rationale for requested support of any facilities, equipment, or materials must also be included.
Supporting Information
Resumes (or curriculum vitae) for the applicant and all assistants should be provided to support your application. Included with the resumes should be a listing of at least three current professional references. The application to the appropriate Ethical Committee including copies of informed consent forms if research involves human subjects or human materials/specimen (i.e. blood samples). A complete description of the facilities, equipment, and materials available for your use should also be provided.
A bibliography of supporting literature will help to provide further support to your application.
Once the ITF has accepted the proposal and allocated the corresponding grant, the main researcher will have to sign the document of agreement which will be sent after receiving and approving the application.
