| Thailand hosts Level 1 Coaches course |
Tennis in Thailand has gained widespread popularity thanks in part to the success of Paradorn Srichapan and Tamarine Tanasuguran. Tennis continues to remain ever so popular especially with the recent success of Noppawan Lertcheewakarn winning Junior Wimbledon and being ranked number one in the ITF Junior World Ranking. The Lawn Tennis of Thailand (LTAT) is riding this wave of popularity of tennis in Thailand and with the assistance of the ITF is working towards implementing a more structured coach’s education program.
The LTAT with support from Olympic Solidarity and the NOC of Thailand organized a Level 1 Coaches course from 11 - 21 September. The course was conducted by ITF expert, Suresh Menon, and with the assistance of three Thai Level 1 Tutors, Suang Chantra-urai, Suwit Pinyotanmakorn and Sak-anan Laokhetku. All of the three tutors are very experienced coaches. Suang is ITF Level 3 certified while both Suwit and Sak-anan possess an ITF Level 2 certification. The response to the course was so overwhelming that the LTAT had to conduct a screening process in order to shortlist the best candidates. A total of 33 coaches were selected from more than 45 applicants.
The LTAT plans to conduct more Level 1 courses using the local tutors to upgrade the level of the coaches in order to take advantage of the burgeoning talent and they also plan to organize a Level 2 Coaches course in 2010.
Suresh Menon, ITF Development Officer for Asia and course expert commented, "Thailand has always been at the forefront of coaches’ education and was the first nation in Asia to organize the ITF Level 2 & 3 certification programs".
