| Fiji hosts regional Play Tennis course |
The International Tennis Federation, with support from the Oceania Tennis Federation, delivered the “Play Tennis Course” at the Goodman-Fielder Regional Training Centre in Lautoka, Fiji, from 29 - 31 August.
Twenty-two participants from 13 nations in the region were involved in the course which was conducted by Frank Couraud, ITF Development Projects Administrator assisted by Gerard Winter of New Caledonia.
The Play Tennis Course has assisted Oceania coaches to join a worldwide program called “Tennis 10s.” This program introduces 5-9 year old children to tennis that is played on smaller courts, with shorter rackets and softer balls. Small courts and modified equipment makes it easier for children to learn – and more fun! The new approach means children will SERVE, RALLY & SCORE in their very first tennis lesson.
Dan O'Connell, ITF Development Officer for the Pacific/Oceania region commented, "The response from the coaches was overwhelming. Now it is time for our coaches to transform one tennis court into 4-6 smaller courts and then introduce tennis in this new, fun manner!".
