ITF Coach Education Programme
The basic goal of the ITF’s Coach Education Programme is twofold: To improve the level of tennis coaching in all regions and to involve National Associations in the Coaches Education and Certification programmes.
At this moment, National Courses for coaches continue to be held annually in more than 60 countries all over the world as required. A Level I and Level II coaching syllabus is now available in English, French and Spanish for use by member nations with the aim of encouraging these nations to introduce a national coaches’ certification system. This syllabus is already being used by over 40 ITF Member Nations.
The ITF also organises the ITF Worldwide Coaches Workshop, which is held every two years and has become a unique international forum for high level coaches. Regional Coaches Workshops take place biannually in Central and South America, Asia and Africa and provide an important and cost effective educational opportunity for the better coaches from these regions.
Educational Materials are being produced by the ITF Research Officer in English, French and Spanish to help member nations in all areas of development including grass roots programmes, coaches’ education and competitive programmes. Materials available are the following: Level I Manual, Advanced Coaches Manual, STI Teachers Manual, Mini-Tennis: Developing the base, Coaching children and young people in tennis, and Tennis Practices. Coaches Review, the official ITF publication for tennis coaches is produced three times per year in English, Spanish and French.
The specific objectives of the ITF Coaches Education Programme are to continue to hold National Courses in countries as required but trying to adapt the experts and contents to the specific characteristics of each country. Furthermore, the ITF will try to help member nations to introduce a national coaches’ certification system by assisting them in setting their own Coaches School.
As per the Worldwide Coaches Workshop, the ITF will improve the format in order to meet the demands of quality for the information of high level coaches. In the Regional Coaches Workshops, the ITF is intending to help local coaches to attend these workshops and to adapt the speakers and the topics to the needs of each Region. Furthermore, it is planned to utilise experienced coaches from each region in the Coach Education programmes and to train local coaches to conduct Level I and Level II courses.
In the new future, more educational materials for coach education will be produced, and the quality of the materials included in Coaches Review will improve by increasing the level of pre-requisites for publication.
