OEFFINGEN, GERMANY: Both the men's and women's doubles events provided surprise finalists at this G3 tournament which eventually saw the Italian men's favourites Alex Mingozzi and Paolo Tronci and the mixed nationality pairing of Carina Burk and Marisa Mora victorious at the Oeffingen Beach Tennis Open, the second leg of the DTB Beach Tennis Circuit.

The men’s doubles final saw the Italian top seeds face the unseeded Russian Zaichenko brothers; Stanislav and Vladislav. The brothers had caused two major upsets en route to the final with defeats of the third and second seeded teams in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively, both with the loss of just four games, and were looking to add another seeded scalp to their record.

However, Mingozzi and Tronci proved too good on the day and registered a 62 64 triumph over the tournament’s surprise package.

Host nation Germany’s best showing in the men’s event came courtesy of Alexander Bailer and Oliver Munz. The fourth seeds reached the semifinal stage where they came up against the eventual tournament champions who triumphed in straight sets 64 61.

The women’s event featured six all-German pairings in the main draw but it was the second seeded German-American partnership of Carina Burk and Marisa Mora who walked away with the title following a hard fought 76 46 63 win over surprise finalists Eva Maes and Sindy Put.

The unseeded Belgian duo had earlier featured in the tournament’s major upset with their quarterfinal 62 46 60 defeat of the top seeds.

Of the all-German pairings it was Dorothee Berreth and Monika Keller, seeded third, and the fourth seeded Lisa-Marie Burkle and Ina Stoller who came closest to reaching the final in front of their home crowd but both narrowly missed out on a place in the final following close three set losses.

All the players, it must be said, showed great determination and refused to allow the unfortunate bad weather conditions to faze them in the slightest and the playing standard over the weekend on the Oeffingen beach courts was often described as world-class, most notably from the highly ranked men’s doubles champions who produced some stunning play!

As a bonus for beach tennis fans, pre-tournament Alex Mingozzi gave his time to the VISION Beach Tennis Academy where both beginners and advanced players were engaged in professional training sessions.

Away from the beach the participants were invited to a Saturday wine tasting evening at Fellbacher Weingärtner and on Sunday after the awards ceremony the players spent some time at the famous Stuttgart Spring Fest, a great way to cap off a great weekend of beach tennis action!
