In a further reflection of the significant growth of beach tennis, the ITF are delighted to announce that a fourth major Championship will be joining the ITF Beach Tennis Tour.

In addition to the already established ITF Beach Tennis World Team Championship, ITF Beach Tennis World Championships and the European Beach Tennis Championships, a new Pan American Championships will be staged for the first time in September 2013.

The South American nation of Brazil will host the inaugural tournament in Porto Seguro over the period 17-20 September. The Championships will be immediately followed by a $10,000 Grade 1 tournament at the same venue to complete a great and historic week of beach tennis action in South America.

Over the years beach tennis has grown in popularity in the Americas with nations boasting an impressive number of ranked players. This is led in particular by the Brazilians who counted three players in the women’s Top 10 as of 24 June 2013, and who finished runners-up to Italy at the ITF Beach Tennis World Team Championship in 2012.

As interest in this fast-paced and action-packed sport continues to spread, an increasing number of nations in the region are starting to host tournaments. A number of Grade 1 ITF Beach Tennis Tour events have already been staged in Pan American nations over the years including Brazil, USA, and Bermuda. Aruba has also become one of the most popular ports of call for players competing on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour with its annual Grade 1 event being a highly sought-after title for the world’s elite players.

In 2012 beach tennis was also selected for inclusion in the Bolivarian Beach Games, a multisport event for all Bolivarian nations, which further highlights that interest in the sport is on the rise.

The Pan American Beach Tennis Championships, which will be open to all Pan American nations, is sure to be a welcome addition to the ITF Beach Tennis Tour and help to further promote the sport in this region.

At the time of writing, discussions are still underway with regards to a decision on the format these Championships will take but ranking points will be, like the European Beach Tennis Championships, in the B1 category.
