Lido Estensi, in the Italian province of Ferrara, will host the nation’s first ITF Beach Tennis Tour event of the season on 27-28 April as Italians return to the beach to contest their first 2013 tournament on home sand.
An all-Italian affair in 2012 saw Luca Carli and Michele Cappelletti take the title in the men’s event while Giulia Curzi and Giorgia Gadoni claimed the trophy in the women’s event.
Fresh from back-to-back wins at the Grade 1 events in Reunion and Mauritius earlier this year, Carli and Cappelletti look favourites to defend their title and ranking points at this event. The women’s draw is wide open though as Curzi and Gadoni are yet to play an international event in 2013.
Since the 2012 edition of this event, Italy has confirmed its dominance in the sport by winning the ITF Beach Tennis World Team Championship in 2012 and it will be only the bravest of international players that dare to step foot on the Italian sand.
There will also be amateur and junior compeitions for non-professional players to join in the action and get invovled in the beach tennis spirit.
Whatever happens at this event, there is no doubt that it will be the first of many events in the country to see beach tennis at its best and players from around the world flocking in throughout the year to test their skills on the Italian sands.
