ORANJESTAD, ARUBA: The top seeded team of Alessandro Calbucci and Marco Garavini won the Divi Resorts Aruba International Beach Tennis Event in a sizzling, awesome final against their countrymen Matteo Marighella and Luca Meliconi, who struggled to cope with fast, strong serves and smashes.
Marighella and Meliconi, the 2011 champions and No. 2 seeds, lost 62 63 to the title favourites in the Amstel Bright Arena.
The Italian women were also victorious as second seeds Sofia Cimatti and Giulia Curzi defeated the American defending champions and top seeds Nadia Johnson and Nicole Melch in a show of great force and technique 61 75.
The four days of the Beach Tennis Event were filled with fantastic matches in all categories, music, drinks, food and wonderful people, who were having the time of their lives. The large, happy group of Brazilians made a party of every day and night together with the players of other nationalities.
A grand set-up saw 26 courts spread all over Eagle Beach. The event had more than 600 participants and Sunday drew around 2000 spectators. The fun and action began on Thursday with non-ITF ranking singles matches and continued on Friday with introduction of further non-ITF ranking events: mixed doubles, Team Cup and Nations Cup.
As the sun set the action turned towards a night session of ITF doubles events and the start of players' quests for vital world ranking points.
The weekend action saw the ITF doubles ranking events feature on both the Saturday and Sunday culminating in the Italian title successes and the start of a beach tennis player party.
While all the participants were still sleeping after the party, over on Eagle Beach BTA created a singles court specifially for the Monday night non-ITF ranking pro singles finals which were played ahead of another party to close out this popular tournament.
