MUNICH, GERMANY: The ever increasing reputation and awareness of beach tennis continues to grow as demonstrated in Munich which held a tournament alongside an ATP Tour event, following on from the Stuttgart event held 27-29 April which was once again staged alongside a major WTA tournament.

Two ATP players even took up Wild Cards to try their hand in the men’s doubles event. The players, Dustin Brown of Germany and Martin Fischer from Austria, teamed up and were drawn to face the all-German pairing of Benjamin Blank & Tobias Notter in the opening round.

The match proved to be very close but in the end victory went to the beach tennis regulars with a 64 76(6) triumph. Despite defeat, the ATP Tour players seemed to enjoy the beach tennis experience!

Other ATP pros were also in attendance. Potito Starace was supporting his fellow Italians while Marcos Baghdatis was cheering on his brother Petros.

The Munich title was taken by Italians Paolo Tronci & Luca Cramarossa. The top seeds narrowly saw off the second seeded Brazilians Marcus Ferreira & Thales Santos 75 46 [10-7] in a tense final showdown.

Over in the women’s event an all-German final was won by number two seeds Dorothee Berreth & Monika Keller who came from behind to defeat the top seeded Maraike Biglmaier & Edith Tosner 46 60 [11-9].

More German beach tennis action is to follow, again in Munich, over the dates of 3-6 May 2012.
