CHERKASI, RUSSIA: French players led the way in the recent G1 tournament held in Russia, the first of this grading in the nation.
Both draws were heavily loaded with all-Russian pairings as the teams battled it out for the title and a share of the $10,000 prize money on offer.
This tournament provided fans with a great opportunity to see some high level beach tennis in Russia before the staging of the second annual World Team Championship starting in less than two weeks.
French joint world number 25’s, Marie-Eve and Mathilde Hoarau claimed the women’s title with a three set, 62 16 [10-7], defeat of the top seeded pairing of Maria Buuts and Flavia Muniz of Aruba and Brazil respectively.
There was also a French winner in the men’s event where Regis Courtois, teamed with Brazilian player Vinicius Font, came through all five rounds without loss of a set. A 62 63 win over Brazilian number one seeds Marcus Ferreira and Thales Santos saw them crowned champions.
