Vinicius Font (BRA) and Alex Mingozzi (ITA)
BALNEARIO CAMBORIU, BRAZIL: When the ITF Beach Tennis action was last here, back in November 2013, among the title winners were Brazilians Vinicius Font, Samantha Barijan and Joana Cortez. Now, over the first weekend of April, the same three players once again took the titles.
Vinicius Font, the world No. 3, is closing the gap on the joint world No. 1s Alessandro Calbucci and Marco Garavini, and took the men’s title as top seed with partner Alex Mingozzi, European Champion in 2010.
The pair eased into the final without dropping more than two games in any one set over three rounds of action following a first round bye. In the final they faced Calbucci and Meliconi and it was the Italian duo who took the first set 64.
It was not long, however, before Font and Mingozzi, having just lost their first set of the tournament, inflicted a first-set loss on their opponents, dropping just two games to level the match and take the final into a decisive third set.
Here the top seeds completed their comeback to claim a first title together since last December, winning 46 62 63.
“For me this title meant too much," said Font following his title triumph. "I am thrilled because I am watching my work paying off with my results and will try to keep working to win more. Me and Mingozzi played fantastic and stayed calm on the key moments to win it.”
For Barijan and Cortez this was a first title of the year following on from the six, four of which were also Grade 1 events, they won in 2013. The pair also had 2013 success at the World Team Championship along with Font and at the Pan American Championships.
Their 62 63 triumph over the second seeds Pauline Bourdet and Flavia Muniz also ensured the top-seeded pair emerged from the tournament without loss of a set.
