G1 Carnon, France - 9 Sept 2013
CARNON, FRANCE: Catherine Henuzet and Capucine Rousseau delivered a home triumph in the first ever French Grade 1 level ITF Beach Tennis tournament, held in Carnon on the south coast of France on 14-15 September.
Home fans had plenty to cheer about in the women’s event as three of the four semifinalists hailed from the host nation with Pauline Bourdet and Magalie Garnier and Henuzet and Rousseau, seeded third and fourth respectively, setting up an all-French clash in the final.
While Bourdet and Garnier had come through successive three-set matches en route to the title decider, they were unable to go all the way in another match that went the distance. They had taken the first set in each of their matches through to the final but this time they fell behind and, despite levelling the match, were unable to continue the momentum and complete the comeback.
Henuzet and Rousseau bossed the decisive set to win 64 46 62 to claim the title and add to their previous triumphs in France this year in Rennes and Gavres, both Grade 3 tournaments.
The men’s title was decided in a battle between the top two seeds from Italy; No. 1 pairing Luca Cramarossa and Alex Mingozzi and No. 2 seeds Matteo Marighella and Luca Meliconi. The second seeds had not dropped a set en route to the final and a 75 62 upset of the top seeds ensured they maintained their perfect record.
The Carnon title was their second of 2013 in France, having also triumphed at a Grade 2 tournament held in Royan in August.
