MATA DE SAO JOAO, BRAZIL: The beach tennis season in Brazil draws to a close in Mid-December with a third G1 tournament of the year, and what a season it has been for the nation!
A season which started in March has witnessed the nation crowned World Team Champions in Moscow back in July before hosting, and winning, the inaugural Pan American Championships two months later.
Also, since September, the Brazilian women Samantha Barijan and Joana Cortez have occupied the top spot in the ITF World Rankings and with Flavia Muniz in sixth place, Brazilians now share three of the top six places with Italians. Brazil can also boast being the only non-Italian nation to have players ranked in the men’s Top 10 with Vinicius Font and Guilherme Prata sitting proudly at fifth and ninth respectively.
2013 has certainly seen the emergance of Brazil as real challengers to the Italian dominance of the sport.
This latest Brazilian G1 will be the 16th tournament, including the Pan American Championships, to be held in the South American nation and will immediately follow on from a series of Brazilian based tournaments held over the two preceding weeks.
These tournaments will provide a great opportunity for fans to show their appreciation of their nation’s players' efforts over the course of the 2013 beach tennis season.
The corresponding season ending G1 tournament in 2012, which was held in at the same venue as this year’s tournament, saw Italians Alessandro Calbucci and Luca Cramarossa sweep aside all-comers to take the men’s title with Barijan and Cortez triumphant in the women’s final.
