This week has been an historic one in the women’s game on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour as for the first time we have non-Italian world No.1 ranked players!

Brazilian players Samantha Barijan and Joana Cortez were announced on Monday as the joint top ranked players on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour, ending the long dominance of the Italian players.

Barijan and Cortez have ascended to the top ranking almost three years after winning their first title together back in December 2010 at a G2 tournament held in Rio De Janeiro. Their current ranking sees five title wins making up their best six results of the past 52 weeks with a further title triumph sitting just outside their ‘Best 6’ countable tournaments.

If you were wondering, that sixth tournament making up their current ranking was a runners-up finish at a USA G1 back in April.

Earlier in 2013, the new No.1's, who have amassed an impressive four G1 titles over the past year, played a key role in Brazil claiming the 2013 World Team Championship crown by upsetting the defending champions Italy and, in doing so, avenging their nation’s 2012 final defeat to the Italians.

Brazil can now boast three female players in the current Top 10, including the new joint world No.1's and also have the four highest non-Italian male players, two of which feature in the Top 10.

Coming up this month the South American nation will also be hosting the inaugural ITF Beach Tennis Pan American Championships. These Championships become the fourth major event on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour calendar.

In addition to the Pan American Championships, five other tournaments are set to take place in Brazil over the remaining months of the year.

2013 has, so far, been a great year for the Brazilian nation in beach tennis.
