Beach Tennis - Bournemouth, GBR - August 2012
BOURNEMOUTH, GREAT BRITAIN: The first ITF Beach Tennis event managed by BTUK (Beach Tennis UK) took place in Boscombe Beach on 18-19 August. Players from seven nations took part with many UK pairs entering. In the Men’s event the top seeds were from Italy, Davide Pagella and Simone Innocente who are currently both ranked inside the top 120.
Many spectators gathered to watch, some very keen and curious to understand more about this relatively new sport to the UK. All were able to try the sport for free on the ‘have a go court’ with help from a coach. This court was packed all weekend long and queues were forming for a 20 minute trial.
As well as the free have-a-go court there was a free sand fitness court where members of the public competed for free T-shirts.
The tournament itself was played on a knock-out basis with matches scheduled as the best of three sets; the third set being a 10-point Championship tie-break. There were many competitive matches throughout the weekend with impressive diving and great reactions featuring throughout.
In addition to the thrilling on-court action, throughout the weekend a DJ played a mixture of tracks, player’s requests and also provided those in attendance with any announcements.
With the sun streaming down, a blue sky and a packed beach, day two proved very eventful with many more matches spread out across the five beach tennis courts. The day came to a close with the playing of the doubles finals from the Ladies, Men’s and Mixed events with all finalists entering the Centre Court arena to a track of their choice.
Men’s finalists Andy Phillips and Ben Pritchard from West Hants Tennis Club came onto court to David Bowie and ‘Heroes’ although it was not quite enough to inspire them to victory against the top seeded Italian pair. However, having only picked up a beach tennis racket that weekend it was certainly an impressive effort from the British duo.
The Ladies’ doubles title was won by Kim Roberts and Katie Shaw from Wimbledon who upset local girl Rebecca Lever and her partner, Brighton’s Chrissy Batty.
Following the Bournemouth International Beach Tennis Tournament there are now 18 British men ranked internationally on the ITF World Rankings list. Prior to the event Britain had no men ranked!
The four ladies have also gained valuable ranking points and now ten British ladies are set to feature in the ITF World Rankings when the new ranking list comes out on Monday, 10 September.
