Tournament Review

New champions were crowned on Saturday at the European Beach Tennis Championships in Eilat, Israel including the first non-Italian winners of a European title.

In keeping with seedings, the men's and women's doubles finals were contested by the top two seeds from Italy with the number one seeds triumphing on both occasions in three set thrillers.

Michele Cappelletti and Matteo Marighella held off a fighback from Luca's Carli and Meliconi to win 64 36 62 whilst the women's top seeds, Federica Bacchetta and Sofia Cimatti, were stunned in the opening set where they failed to get a game on the board but recovered and ran out 06 63 75 winners.

It was in the mixed doubles event that the Italian hold over the titles was finally brought to an end. A 61 opening set win seemed to be setting the top seeded Italians Marighella and Bacchetta on course for the title but Russian fourth seeds Nikita Burmakin and Daria Churakova struck back to level the match and then dominated in the match tiebreak to secure the title with a 16 75 [10-2] victory and create a little bit of history.
