The Hopman Cup was born out of admiration for the great Australian Harry Hopman. When Australian players Paul McNamee, Charlie Fancutt and Pat Cash founded the international mixed teams event, who better to dedicate the concept to than the man who guided Australia to an incredible 15 Davis Cup victories.
The participation of top-ranked players is a clear indication of the prestige that the Hopman Cup enjoys within the tennis elite. For the players, it is an entertaining way of opening their season in Australia before they head to Melbourne Park for the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open.
Despite its relatively recent launch in December 1988, the Hopman Cup has become one of the most anticipated events on the tennis calendar. A player’s year is crammed with individual competitions, so it’s no surprise that the few team events available offer a refreshing change. The Hopman Cup is the only international mixed teams competition and it has often been said that it gives players a different perspective on the game.
